Ancient Poliochni

Ancient Poliochni is considered the oldest settlement in Europe. The excavations on the island of Lemnos revealed some surprising facts about the city of Poliochni, which is the oldest Neolithic city in the entire Aegean region. Archaeologists found here four chronologically different settlements built on top of each other. The oldest of the settlements, built around 4,000 BC, was the Blue Poliochni, followed by the Green Poliochni covering an area of 11,000 square meters. The third and fourth settlements were the Red Poliochni and the Yellow Poliochni respectively, with the latter being considered destroyed in 2100 BC, around the same time as Homer's Troy. These names were given to the cities by the colors of the houses.
