Sightseeing

Melissani Cave
Just outside Sami, the Cave of Melissani has a strange charm. It is one of the "must" visit places for tourists in Greece. Inside the cave you will find a lake, surrounded by trees and forests. The cave itself has a B shape with two "chambers" separated from an island in the center. The roof of one chamber had been opened for centuries, leaving the sunlight undisturbed. The depth of the lake is about 30 meters. At noon, when the sun is just above the cave, its light caresses the turquoise waters, creating a magical illusion and the whole Cave of Melissani is suddenly illuminated with blue light! Legend has it that the cave was named after the nymph Melissanthi who committed suicide because her love for God Panas was not reciprocated.
Local gastronomy

Tsigarida
This Cephalonian dish consists of various greens cooked together with tomatoes and various spices and herbs. Onions, celery, leeks or spinach are usually used in their preparation and different options of wild greens, such as chard, sour grass or thistle. Tsigarides are also enriched with rice, while the ideal season of this food is spring, when there are plenty of wild greens. You can enjoy tsigarida as a main dish and combine them with smelly, freshly fermented bread.
