CHANIA

One of the most beautiful cities in Greece, and one of the most developed districts in the country in terms of touristic infrastructures. Both the city and the province of Chania are among the most preferred destinations for Greek and foreign travellers alike. A mosaic of cultures, flavours, architectures and traditions, scattered around a fascinating landscape of mountain and seaside that constitutes the scenery of the area. Chania can combine: adventurous escapes, gastronomic tours, nature lover’s expeditions and family relaxation in the same way a local can narrate a lifetime story in a single mantinada.

The Old Venetian Harbour

The most captivating and lively part of the city, the Venetian Harbor is a beautiful promenade consisting of three successive Coasts: the Koundouriotis Coast extends to the right of the walls of the Firkas Fortress. Its landmarks are the Maritime Museum of Crete, which once housed the naval garrison of the Venetians in Chania, and the Fountain Square located at the end of Kountourioti Coast which used to be the central quare of the city of Chania. Past the intersection with the Fountain square, starts the Tombazi Coast which is dominated by the Giali Tzami (the “Seaside Mosque” ie Turkish). Behind it one can see the Byzantine walls towering the Kasteli hill which is known as the place where the history of the city of Chania began as a continuation of Ancient Kydonia. Right after lies the Enoseos Coast with its imposing complex of 7 remaining docks out of the 17 shipyards initially built by the Venetians in order to tow and repair their ships which now house municipal and cultural venues as well as bars and cafes. The experience of the port is completed with a stroll along the Breakwater with the famous Venetian Lighthouse on its edge which offers a panoramic view of the city of Chania and the White Mountains composing the ridge in the background.

Old Town

Behind the Koundouriotis Coast lies a charming complex of narrow alleys, crossing tall stone buildings, impressive arches, Byzantine and Venetian fortification walls, beautiful courtyards decorated with colorful flowers and various taverns, small boutique hotels, cafeterias, and shops. Blessed with Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman architectural influences; signs of the cultures that have passed through its cobbled streets, the old town fascinates the visitors with neighbourhoods such as the Turkish distinct of Splantzia, the aristocratic Topanas district and the Jewish neighbourhood forming a mosaic of cultures promising long lasting memories.

Beaches

Large organized beaches spread on the north side of the county, with sandy Kalathas beach and tranquil Tersanas beach being the favourite family expeditions of the locals. Stavros beach is the movie star of the area, as it became famous through the movie “Zorbas”. Behind Akrotiri, the popular Georgioupolis and the tranquil Kalives are two safe middle-distance options, while further to the west is the cosmopolitan trinity of Agioi Apostoli, Agia Marina and Platanias, with a variety of beach bars, cafes, restaurants and water sports. Balos and Seitan Limania are two adventurous but rewarding options with breath-taking wild beauty and azure waters. The endless sandy beach of Falassarna with the magnificent sunset competing with Elafonisi and its exotic beauty, while the southern beaches have their own charm: the cosmopolitan Paleochora, the peaceful Sougia, the romantic and isolated Loutro, but also the crisp Agia Roumeli at the exit of the Samaria Gorge, or the sandy beach of Frangokastelo, in the shadow of the legendary Frangokastelo castle.
